These supplemental resources have been adapted by a K-1 specialist teacher and support literacy and numeracy building.

NOTE - answer keys/marking guides are accessible only by teachers and are located at the bottom of this page.

Teachers can use/adapt any of these materials as needed.

When possible, content will be updated yearly for relevancy and to check links. However, teachers may find that over time, links to external sources become unavailable. Teachers may want to consider replacing these with alternate sources.

Building Critical Thinking Skills: Let’s Investigate lesson activities and links to resources are listed below.

  • Lesson Activity 1: Guess the Five W’s Game - Who, What, Where, When, Why?
    • We'll play a guessing game to figure out important things like: "Who is it?" "What is happening?" "Where is it?" "When did it happen?" and "Why did it happen?"
    • We'll also learn some new, important words!
    • Critical Thinking 1: Literacy Builder (K-1)

  • Lesson Activity 2: Follow The Directions Game - Can You Follow My Clues?
    • We'll play a game where we listen very carefully and follow directions. This helps us think about what to do next!
    • Students will need colouring supplies and paper. They will listen to the following story and follow these instructions to make drawings:
      • "There is a small red ball on the grass.
      • Next to the ball is a sleepy brown dog.
      • Behind the dog, there is a big yellow house.
      • On top of the house is a green bird singing.
      • A little girl with a blue hat walks to the ball and picks it up."
    • We'll learn even more new words and practice with numbers, like finding numbers that are "buddy numbers" (even) and "lonely numbers" (odd).
    • Critical Thinking: Activity 2 Math Worksheet-Even and Odd Numbers (K-1)

  • Lesson Activity 4: Sorting Game - Where Do Animals Live?
    • We'll become animal detectives and sort animals by where they live. Do they live in the water? In a tree? In a hole? We'll find out!
