Who We Are

Kids Boost Immunity (KBI) is a non-profit Canadian education initiative made possible through a partnership between the Public Health Agency of Canada, the BC Ministry of Health, the Public Health Association of British Columbia, and the BC Centre for Disease Control. We are a small group of experienced classroom teachers, health professionals, and research experts, passionate about education and student engagement.​​​​ 

Co-Development and Review by Educational Partners 

All lessons are either fully developed or co-developed by teachers to ensure that content is age appropriate, linked to curriculum, and meets diverse learning needs. Our health professionals also consult with experts to check that any health-related information is accurate and current.

Lesson development and review is done in consultation and collaboration with external education partners. This occurs at the provincial, school board/district/authority, and individual teacher level, where educators ensure that lessons align with respective philosophies and pedagogy of the curricula. Elementary, middle years and secondary specialists review content,  as do subject specialists in social studies, science, health and other areas as needed. Due to the broad-based content and the wide grade range covered within KBI lessons and quizzes, the reviews are often done simultaneously by multiple teams of educators.

The following chart identifies the process being conducted by each province in reviewing and approving Kids Boost Immunity:

1. Provincial review is done by government level educational curriculum specialists.
2. School board/district/authority review is done by curriculum specialists such as assistant superintendents and/or directors of learning and teacher specialists.
3. Teacher review is done by principals who then share KBI with their teachers, as well as individual teachers themselves.

Provincial and School Board/District reviews can happen for differing grade level groupings:
Elementary (intermediate grades 4-6 or 4-5), Middle school (grades 6-8 or 7-9), High school (grades 8-12, 9-12 or 10-12) 

Editorial and Content Policy

KBI is dedicated to posting accurate, up-to-date and well-researched information for teachers and students. Content is created and reviewed based on the credibility of the original sources and the objectivity of the findings, and is cross-referenced with the needs of each provincial curriculum.

All content on the site is read and signed off by a minimum of three people consisting of:

1. An education professional
2. A staff member from the BC Centre for Disease Control or the Public Health Association of British Columbia
3. An experienced clinician with relevant expertise (e.g. registered nurse, physician, professor)

By doing so, we are able to curate and create content that is accurate, engaging, and mirrors the curriculum.

We also guarantee that the content is created independently of any funding partners.

History

We are based on a sister-site called I Boost Immunity (IBI) that utilizes online quizzes to combat misinformation about immunization and communicable diseases. KBI is tailored for teachers and their classroom, while IBI’s primary target is adults and the general public. 

Kids Boost Immunity would not have been possible without the longstanding support of various representatives across the health sector in British Columbia including the Ministry of Health, PHABC, BCCDC, First Nations Health Authority, Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, Interior Health, Vancouver Island Health, Northern Health and the BC Pharmacy Association. This collective is responsible for developing KBI's sister site I Boost Immunity.
